Can you paddleboard on Lake Tahoe in the winter? Absolutely!
Lake Tahoe is an incredible place to paddleboard (or kayak) with its stunning scenery and crystal-clear water. It's an activity that most people do in the summer, but have you ever tried it in the winter? There’s something magical about being out there when it’s quiet and peaceful, with no boats and barely anyone around. You get the shoreline all to yourself!
If you head out on a sunny, calm day, you’ll likely catch those glassy conditions people dream about. Don’t let the cold temps hold you back—grab your board and enjoy some winter paddleboarding!
What to Wear:
Morning temps can dip to around 30°F, but the sun warms things up fast. Layering is key. Wear moisture-wicking base layers, a long-sleeve shirt, and pants to keep warm. A vest is a great option for extra warmth, and don’t forget a winter hat or beanie to keep your head toasty. I also like to bring a pair of cozy socks to keep my feet warm.
Where to Launch:
While you can technically launch from almost anywhere around the lake, Sand Harbor State Park is one of the easiest spots to access and offers quick entry to the east shore. There’s a $15 fee to enter, but it’s totally worth it for the convenient launch spot. From here, you can paddle north or south, both offering incredible scenery.
What Time of Day to Go:
Mornings are better than afternoons, but you can go anytime—it really depends on the weather and conditions. The wind tends to pick up in the afternoon, so mornings are best for calm waters. I like using Windfinder to check the hourly wind forecast to plan the best time to go.
Can I Rent a Paddleboard in Lake Tahoe in Winter?
Most rental shops close in the winter, so owning a board is a must. Inflatable boards are affordable and easy to transport, and once you have one, you won’t have to worry about renting again. Plus, you'll have more flexibility on where and how long you can paddleboard around Lake Tahoe.
A Few More Winter Paddle Boarding Tips:
Protect Yourself from the Sun: The sun is strong year-round at Lake Tahoe. Wear sunscreen, polarized sunglasses, and a hat.
Bring the Essentials: Pack plenty of water and some snacks to keep your energy up.
Stay Comfortable: If standing feels unstable, sit or kneel for better balance.
Check Your Board: Make sure it’s fully inflated for a solid deck and better control.
Enjoy the Season: Winter in Lake Tahoe is peaceful and beautiful. Dress warm, paddle safely, and have fun!
